Youth Correctional Officer Opportunities

Youth Correctional Officers work in many different locations, from inside correctional facilities, to rural conservation camps, to transporting wards, coaching, mentoring and more. YCOs may be assigned to one or more of the following assignments inside a facility:
- Visitor Processing
- Visiting Room
- Central Control/Communications
- Perimeter Security Towers
- Security Roving Patrol
- Transportation
- Supervising education and vocational programs
- Receiving and Release
- Culinary Service (central Kitchen, Dining Room)
- Search and Escort
- Pedestrian & Vehicle Sally Port
- Staff Entrance
- Hospital Security
- Work Crew
- Living Unit Supervision
- Gym and recreational programs
SPECIALIZED ASSIGNMENTS:
Youth Correctional Officers may be considered for specialized assignments, such as:
Wards are transported from one facility to another for care and reassignment. YCOs on the transporation team play an important role in safely transporting California's ward population.
Dog Handlers and their dogs complete an eight week, two-part training session. The first session is for protection training and the second session is for narcotics detection training. The dogs are used mostly to detect narcotics inside the institutions.
Institution Recruitment Team Members are trained to recruit qualified Peace Officers for the department in local communities. Recruiters attend Job/Career Fairs, College Classes, Military Transition Assistance (TAP) Classes, County Fairs, and a variety of other local community based activities.
The Honor Guard Team provide the Color Guard for a number of social functions throughout the local community.
Camp Officers are responsible for the safety, security, and welfare of CDCR wards in a rural camp setting. They work in conjuctions with the Department of Forestry or other agencies during emergencies such as wildland fires, floods and earthquakes by supervising ward crews thoughout the state.

Parole Agent
Parole Agents are employed in the facilitiy and out in the community to help supervise wards. In the institution they have oversight of counseling programs on wards assigned to their unit. In the community they supervise parolees to assist them in making a successful transition back into the community.

Staff employed in the Division of Juvenile Justice may transfer and promote to and from the adult division, allowing for even more opportunities.
