Military Transitions

Why a career with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR)?

If you have spent some of the best years of your life in uniform, then you have the experience we're looking for. As the largest law enforcement agency in California, the CDCR offers promotional opportunities and an outstanding salary, benefits, and retirement package.

What if I don't have any law enforcement experience?

In the military, your ability to follow orders, work as a unit, and accomplish a mission are the skills we're looking for. When you join our ranks, you will attend our academy where you will get the tools and training needed to provide safety and security in a correctional facility.

I have a few more years left in the military. Can I test now for CDCR or do I have to wait?

When we are open for testing we advise you to apply, check updates link to view when testing is open. If you are on active military duty and are offered a position as a correctional cadet, the California Government Code (19775.8 and 18901) provides that you may enter the next available Academy class or defer entry for up to eight years (or up to three years after leaving the military).
If you are not able to complete the peace officer selection process due to military deployment, please contact our office via email at CustomerService.OPOS@cdcr.ca.gov.

Can I get veteran's points added to my test score?

Yes, you can file the appropriate paperwork (Form SPB-1093) and, based on your experience, get up to 10 points added to your test results. For further information regarding Military Preferential Credits, please contact the California State Personnel Board at (916) 653-1502.

Does my military time count toward my peace officer retirement plan with CDCR?

You may purchase up to four years of retirement service credit with the California Public Employee's Retirement System (CalPERS) based on your prior military service. For details, please visit the CalPERS web site at www.calpers.ca.gov.

Can I use my special military training at CDCR?

There are several assignments at CDCR which require special skills, such as those learned in the military. For example, if you have special weapons training there are opportunities with the Crisis Response Teams (CRT), which respond to emergencies in the institutions, and work with local law enforcement agencies to apprehend fugitives and parolees. There are also opportunities with the Investigative Services Units (ISU) which investigate crime scenes, as well as collect and analyze intelligence within the institutions.
