Proud Parenting Program
The Proud Parenting Program supports projects implemented by community-based organizations and other local agencies willing to serve at-risk youth, including teen parents and youthful offenders on parole from state juvenile corrections facilities.
The underlying goal of the Proud Parenting Program is to break the inter-generational cycle of violence and delinquency among the children of project participants by increasing their parenting knowledge, improving attitudes about being responsible parents, and strengthening relationships between participants and their children. The program consists of three key components: classroom instruction, structured family activities, and mentoring. The classroom instruction component uses curriculum developed for the Young Men as Fathers Program, a successful initiative that served as the foundation for the Proud Parenting Program.
Upon assuming responsibility for these grants in mid-2005, Corrections Standards Authority staff conducted on-site visits to observe program operations, assess compliance with the requirements of the grant award, and provide technical assistance. Based on findings from this monitoring process, funds appropriated in the 2005/06 Budget for the Proud Parenting Program ($850,000) support 14 local projects. The Grant Agreements for these programs cover the July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006 period.
