There will be a transitional period of six months, beginning January 1, 2007 through June 30, 2007, whereby agencies and training providers may use either the previous curriculum from 2003 or the new curriculum. Effective July 1, 2007, the new curriculum will be the only option available.
There are substantial improvements to the curriculum based on:
- Recent job analysis research
- Extensive input from many local juvenile corrections practitioners throughout the state
- Subject Matter Experts from various disciplines (e.g., exercise physiologists, medical authorities, etc.)
Highlights of these improvements are as follows:
- Expanded course hours from 134 to 160
- Increased Communications Skills training
- Increased Defensive Tactics training
- Comprehensive Report Writing sections
- Fire and Life Safety training
- Focused Medical and Mental Health training, including suicide prevention
- Updated Physical Conditioning Unit
- Specific emphasis on adult learning techniques
Since the 2007 curriculum has been substantially changed from the 2003 version, agencies and training providers are asked to submit their certification requests 60 days prior to the first delivery of the course.
Please feel free to contact the STC Program for any assistance needed in fulfilling the certification requirements, interpretation of the materials and delivery methods. Core instructor training is also available, upon request.
