State Selection and Training Standards for Correctional Peace Officers-Rank and File Classifications

Primary Functional Areas for Rank and File Classifications

CSA staff determined through research and analysis that there is significant overlap in the duties performed by California’s correctional peace officer classifications. The staff grouped all of the job classifications on a rational basis by their primary job function, and clustered the 19 classifications according to their work environment and primary functions. Six job function categories were identified based on the training and job duty. The following rank and file classifications are categorized by their primary job function or job family. 

Job Family 1: Care & Supervision of Offenders
Correctional Officer (Adult), Entry Level
Youth Correctional Officer (Juvenile), Entry Level
Youth Correctional Counselor (Juvenile), Entry Level

Job Family 2: Counseling & Classification
Institutional Parole Agent I (Juvenile), Entry Level
