Board Member Sheriff Gary Penrod

A native of California, and a resident of San Bernardino County since 1953, Sheriff Gary Penrod attended Redlands High School and has completed numerous college courses furthering his law enforcement career at San Bernardino Valley College, Victor Valley College, and the University of California at Santa Barbara and Riverside. He was a member of the U.S. Forest Service and served in the U.S. Army.

Sheriff Penrod and his wife Nancy live in Yucaipa, California. A member of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department since 1971, Sheriff Penrod held every rank from Deputy to Deputy Chief before being elected Sheriff in 1994. He has experience in corrections, patrol, investigations, narcotics, training, community service, and senior management. He has held assignments in Big Bear Lake, Barstow, Victorville, Hesperia, and the San Bernardino Valley.

During his tenure, Sheriff Penrod strongly supports community-based policing and has implemented many innovative programs and staffing enhancements including: Crime Free Multi-Housing, Operation Clean SWEEP, Public Safety Internship Academy, Marijuana Eradication Team, Methamphetamine Lab Task Force, and Narcotics Special Enforcement Teams.

Under Sheriff Penrod's leadership, the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department continues to flourish on the cutting edge of law enforcement innovation and technology. Always an active citizen in the communities he lives in and serves, Sheriff Penrod is a member of the International Footprint Association, San Bernardino County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association, San Bernardino Area Chamber of Commerce, Native Sons of the Golden West, Western State Sheriffs' Association, California Peace Officers' Association, California State Sheriffs' Association, National Sheriffs' Association just to mention a few. Sheriff Penrod also was appointed to the Attorney General's California Rural Crime Prevention Task Force. Sheriff Gary Penrod is widely respected throughout the law enforcement community for his high standards and exceptional work ethic.
