The Advanced Academies Unit is responsible for providing training according to California Government Code, Penal Code, and Department Operations Manual (DOM) mandates. This includes Basic Supervision, Advanced Supervision, Sergeant's Academy, Lieutenant's Academy, and Management Training for all first and second line supervisors, both custody and non-custody staff.  In addition to providing these programs in-house, the Advanced Learning Institute has partnered with Sacramento State University, College of Continuing Education to provide Supervisory and Management courses that satisfy these mandates and incorporate leadership into the curriculum.

The Leadership Academy Unit (LA) has established a department-wide leadership program in partnership with Sacramento State University, College of Continuing Education for executives and designated managers.  LA has also partnered with Sonoma Learning Systems to deliver the Leadership Challenge to first and second line supervisors. The LA also delivers the California Public Safety Leadership and Ethics Program to executives, managers, and supervisors. In addition, the Basic Correctional Officer Academy includes 2 weeks of leadership training in it's 16-week academy.
