Under the direction of the Staff Services Manager III, the Professional Education and Development (PED) Section provides technical support and training curriculum for In-Service Training offices statewide; liaison and technical support to Headquarters’ Offices and Training Coordinators; multimedia development of computer-based and/or web-based learning programs; and maintains the Office of Training and Professional Development's web site and and partners with professional organizations to augment employee training and professional development programs; oversees’ the development, implementation and evaluation of rehabilitation related training programs for Secure Reentry Facilities (SRF), Reception Centers’ (RC), Institutions’, Paroles’ and Headquarters’ (HQ) staff. PED also manages the Headquarters’ meeting/training classrooms.

Under the direction of the Correctional Administrator, the Basic Peace Officer Institute (BPOI) Section is responsible for the Basic Correctional Officer Academy (BCOA) for the State of California. Cadets who complete the training are certified as Peace Officers and Correctional Officers for California State Prisons. In addition to the BCOA, the BPOI provides Parole Agent training, and Advanced Peace Officer training. Under the direction of the Correctional Business Manager, the Business Administration and Support Operations and staff from the BPOI Section, provide various services to assist with the success of these programs. Under the direction of the Staff Services Manager II, Curriculum and Program Development develops learning materials for academy training courses, evaluates and makes recommendations for improvement on planned improvement activities for all training academies.
Under the direction of the Program Administrator, the Advanced Learning Institutes (ALI) Section provides training for all first and second line supervisors, both custody and non-custody staff. Training includes Advanced Supervision, Basic Supervision, Lieutenant’s Academy, and Sergeant’s Academy. The ALI has established a department-wide leadership program in partnership with Sacramento State University, College of Continuing Education for executives and designated managers. The ALI has also partnered with Sonoma Learning Systems to deliver the Leadership Challenge to first and second line supervisors, executives, managers, and supervisors. The support to successfully run these programs is provided by the Advanced Learning Institutes staff. The Basic Correctional Juvenile Academy (BCJA) under the direction of the BCOI Administrator, is also located at the Stockon Training Center. The BCJA provides training specific to rehabilitation and treatment services for youthful offenders in the care of the Division of Juvenile Justice.
