Housing Inmates Out-of-State

To relieve prison overcrowding, the Legislature adopted AB 900, the Public Safety and Offender Rehabilitation Services Act of 2007. Among its provisions is approval to house up to 8,000 inmates in private correctional facilities outside California. CDCR has contracted with the Correctional Corporation of America (CCA) to house up to 7,772 inmates who will be transferred in groups through Spring, 2009. Volunteer inmates were moved to CCA facilities in November, 2006 and June, 2007. Involuntary inmate transfers began shortly after.
