Calipatria State Prison - Mission Statement

The primary mission of Calipatria State Prison is to provide for the confinement of general population Level I (minimum custody) and Level IV (maximum custody) inmates who are willing to participate in vocational and/or academic programs, prison industries or support services.  Additionally, a portion of the prison is designated for the US Immigration and Naturalization Services to house those inmates with active holds that are within 30-45 days of their scheduled release dates.

Calipatria State Prison opened in January 1992, and covers a total of 1,227.5 acres (with the prison on 300 acres).  As of Fiscal Year 2005/2006, the following statistics apply:

Special Historical Notes

At 184 feet below sea level, Calipatria is at the lowest elevation of any prison in the Western Hemisphere.



Inmate Programs
  • Vocational:  Auto body repair and painting, auto mechanics, carpentry, electrical works, consumer electronics, eyewear manufacturing, landscaping, small engine repair, masonry, janitorial, office services related technologies, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC).
  • Academic: Adult Basic Education, Pre-Release, Literacy Program, Lifeskills, Bridging Program, Correctional Learning Network (CLN), preparation for GED, college correspondence study leading to AA degree, behavior modification unit studies.
  • Other:  Religious, Victim Awareness, Joint Venture, Bicycle Refurbishing, Straight Life Program (Youth diversion program), Life Without a Crutch, Substance Abuse Programs (AA/NA).
