The overall mission of the California Correctional Institution is to incarcerate and control felons, while providing the opportunity for meaningful work, training and other programs.  The prison provides programs for those inmates who are willing to work and participate fully in available programs.

Special Historical Notes

When it originally opened in 1933, CCI housed female inmates.  A 1952 earthquake closed the facility.  It reopened in 1954 as a male institution.  In 1985, the state built the first new maximum security facility in more than 100 years at CCI.   The following year, the prison added a new medium custody facility.


Inmate Programs
  • Vocational:  PIA:  textiles (clothing).
  • Vocational: Air conditioning and refrigeration, appliance repair, auto mechanics, dry cleaning, graphic arts and printing, mill and cabinet, welding, building maintenance.
  • Academic: Adult Basic Education, High School/GED, Pre-Release, English as a Second Language, Literacy Program, College.
  • Other: Community Service Crews, Youth Diversion, Religious, Arts in Corrections, Substance Abuse Program.

Visits are one hour in duration
(by advance appointment only)


¹ Friday visiting is for inmates that have been
disciplinarily free for at least 90 days

From Sacramento:

  • Take Highway 58 east to the city of Tehachapi
  • Take first Tehachapi exit (exit 148 Tucker Road)
  • Right on to Tucker Road
  • Right on to Valley Blvd. (Hwy 202)
  • Continue on Hwy 202 until it dead-ends at CCI

From Los Angeles:

  • Take Highway 58 west to the city of Tehachapi
  • Take third Tehachapi exit (exit 148 Tucker Road)
  • Left on to Tucker Road
  • Right on to Valley Blvd. (Hwy 202)
  • Continue on Hwy 202 until it dead-ends at CCI
