Wasco State Prison-Reception Center - Mission Statement

The Wasco facility was the first of two reception centers in Kern County. The primary mission is to provide short term housing necessary to process, classify, and evaluate new inmates physically and mentally, to determine their security level, program requirements, and appropriate institutional placement.

A 400 bed medium custody facility houses general population inmates to help support and maintain the reception center. A minimum custody facility provides institutional maintenance and landscaping services.

Inmate Programs
  • PIA:  Laundry & Farm Enterprise; Pre-Release; AA/NA; Anger Management; Substance Abuse; Bridging; Visiting; Slow Down/Despacio - a Youth Diversion Program; Religious; Inmate PEER Education; Friends Outside; Parenting Education; TABE (Testing of Adult Basic Education); GED; Libraries; Physical Education/Recreation; Fire Department - consists of 8 inmate firefighter positions; Independent Study Program - Coast Line Community College; Correctional Learning Network

Family Reunification Liaison:

CDCR provides through a contract with a community-based organization an on-site Case Manager as a family reunification liaison for inmates and family members, to assist with an inmate’s pre release preparation; and conduct Parenting and Creative Conflict Resolution classes for inmates.


Visiting Hours and Directions
Visiting Days and Hours:

Fridays from 12:15 pm to 7:15 pm
Processing Time: 12:15 pm to 4:15 pm
(After Institutional Count clears, Visiting Processing will continue until 6:15 pm)

Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 am to 2:45 pm.
All incoming processing begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 1:45 p.m.


Visiting Assistance:

A CDCR funded Visitor Center is at the institution operated by a community-based organization under contract to CDCR. The Visitor Center provides visiting assistance to family members and friends including a sheltered place to wait before and after visits, transportation to and from local transit terminals, childcare, clothing appropriate for visits on loan, and information about local resources, visiting rules and regulations.
