The Office of Training and Professional Development provides CDCR-focused training and staff development programs that inspire employees in the pursuit of professional growth throughout their career, build a capable and prepared workforce, and reinforce the values of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

OTPD Offices

Galt

Under the direction of the Administrator, the Basic Peace Officer Institute (BPOI) Section is responsible for:

  • The Basic Correctional Officer Academy (BCOA) for the State of California (Upon completion of training cadets become peace officers and correctional officers for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.)
  • The Basic Correctional Juvenile Academy (BCJA) for the State of California (The BCJA provides training specific to rehabilitation and treatment services for youthful offenders in the care of the Division of Juvenile Justice.)
  • Adult/juvenile parole agent training

Under the direction of the Correctional Business Manager I (A), the Business Administration and Support Operations Section provides services/programs that include:

  • Accounting and budget
  • Curriculum testing, recruitment/hiring personnel liaison
  • Information systems for OTPD
  • Procurement and warehouse

Under the direction of the Staff Services Manager II, Curriculum and Program Development provides:

  • Development of learning materials for academy and department-wide training courses
  • Evaluation and recommendations for improvement on activities for all training academies

Sacramento

Under the direction of the Staff Services Manager III, the Professional Education and Development (PED) section provides:

  • Technical support and training curriculum for In-Service Training offices department-wide
  • Liaison and technical support to Headquarters' offices and training coordinators
  • Multimedia development of computer-based and/or web-based learning programs
  • Office of Training and Professional Development's (OTPD) website
  • Partners with professional organizations to augment employee training and professional development programs
  • Management of Headquarters' meeting/training classrooms
