Correctional Peace Officer Careers
Academy Life

You have made the decision to join one of the largest and most demanding correctional training facilities in the country. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is recognized as one of the finest correctional agencies in the world. The academy training regimen will instill pride, discipline, respect, and teamwork. Throughout your time at this thirteen-week academy, you will be tested mentally, physically, and emotionally on a daily basis. The CDCR is often described as a "paramilitary" department, and that is true. The uniforms, ranks and insignias, chain of command, and the longstanding traditions resemble a military organization.

You will be expected to gain knowledge and understanding of the current departmental policies and procedures. Throughout your academy experience, emphasis is placed on developing positive and effective communication skills conducive within a correctional environment. These skills will be instrumental in preparing you for future opportunities with the CDCR.
