On June 20, 2022, the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) announced the awarding of $518.5 million in funding to 46 projects in California. The awards are made under the DHCS Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program (BHCIP) Round 3: Launch Ready grants. BHCIP represents a large provision of resources for behavioral health infrastructure in the state’s history and an unprecedented opportunity to address historic gaps and effect meaningful, sustainable change in California’s behavioral health continuum.
The funding will help serve vulnerable populations, including those at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Addressing historic gaps in health care delivery, these investments will ensure care can be provided in the least restrictive settings by creating a wide range of options, including outpatient alternatives, urgent care, peer respite, wellness centers, and social rehabilitation models. They will allow alternatives to incarceration, hospitalization, homelessness, and institutionalization by better meeting the needs of vulnerable populations who face the greatest barriers to access.
