CDCR Hosts Job Fair to Combat Parolee Unemployment

Employing parolees decreases recidivism, promotes public safety, and earns employers $9000 per parolee

PASEDENA — The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s (CDCR) Division of Adult Parole Operations (DAPO) is joining with several Los Angeles County partners in hosting a Parole and Community Team (PACT) Job and Resource Fair specifically for unemployed parolees.

The job fair, offered as an effort to end the cycle of poverty and joblessness that contributes to crime and recidivism, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, in Jackie Robinson Park Auditorium, 1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave., Pasadena.

Studies show that drug-free parolees with a steady job and stable housing are least likely return to prison. But more than half of all the prisoners from Los Angeles County who were released from 2007 through 2009 landed back behind bars. It’s a cycle of poverty and prison for parolees and a burden of high crime and high cost for California’s taxpayers. To help combat that, more than 20 Southern California Companies will be discussing job opportunities with parolees at the PACT Job and Resource Fair.

Thirty resource providers will help parolees become more employable by participating in resume-writing seminars, mock interviews, and getting help filling out applications. As many as 400 job-seeking parolees are expected.

“When parolees get jobs, taxpayers win too. Everyone is safer because employed parolees are less likely to commit crimes and return to prison. This is really a win-win situation,” says Maria Franco, the Regional Administrator for Parole Region III, which is sponsoring the job fair.

Local employers who hire parolees win too. They can receive a federal tax break of up to $9,000 for hiring a parolee. For more information, prospective employers should call the Work Opportunity Tax Credit Processing Center at 866-593-0173 or online at

To help ease employers concerns, parolees are bondable up to $25,000. For more information about that program, contact WorkSource at

The PACT Job and Resource Fair is hosted by DAPO in partnership with Work Source California; the California Department of Motor Vehicles; Los Angeles; Pasadena; and Los Angeles County.
