Officials Arrest Offender Who Had Walked Away From a Fire Camp

CRESTLINE — Law enforcement officials today arrested inmate Raul Martinez, who had walked away from Pilot Rock Conservation Camp in San Bernardino County on November 5, 2020.

At 12:30 a.m., CDCR officers, along with the assistance of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, located Martinez after following investigative leads.  He was taken into custody without incident.  Martinez will be transported to Wasco State Prison and his case will be referred to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of escape charges.

Martinez, 41, was discovered missing at 6:10 p.m. on November 5, 2020, and officers immediately began a search of the camp. CDCR’s Office of Correctional Safety, CAL FIRE, and local law enforcement agencies were quickly notified and assisted in the search.

Martinez was committed to state prison on July 29, 2019, from Los Angeles County to serve a six-year sentence for corporal injury to a specific person resulting in a traumatic condition. He was scheduled to be released in May 2021.

Since 1977, 99 percent of all offenders who have left an adult institution, camp, or community-based program without permission have been apprehended.
