A demotion shall be imposed only when the employee qualifies for and can be expected to do a satisfactory job at the lower level. Demotion may be to any salary in the next lower class that does not exceed the salary the employee last received; however, it is possible to demote to any lower class, within the promotional chain, at a lower than maximum salary. The Notice of Adverse Action must contain the exact salary for each class. A demotion may be permanent or temporary. If temporary, the employee automatically returns to the higher class on the date specified and at the salary step determined by the Hiring Authority.
