DJJ Research and Statistics

The Juvenile Research Branch (JRB) generates a variety of reports and statistical information through its research program. If you have questions about the kinds of information we make readily available, we urge you to carefully read through the following information before e-mailing a question or mailing a research request. Thank you for your interest in JRB.

The JRB carries out the DJJ's research program using the following functions:

  • The youth information function; the JRB manages the Division’s Offender-based Information and Tracking System, develops projections for the Division’s facility and parole populations, publishes reports on the DJJ's youthful offender population, and provides statistical information in response to requests from inside and outside the Division.
  • The research and evaluation function; the JRB carries out short-term and long-term process and impact evaluations of the Division's rehabilitative programs, conducts research projects to enhance the classification of offenders according to their treatment needs and risks, conducts research designed to assess the Division's facility program needs, and provides research-based information to DJJ administrators, staff, and others outside the Division.

The JRB provides information in three broad areas:

  • Facility and parole population characteristics
  • Population projections
  • Research and evaluation reports

Facility and Parole Population Characteristics

The JRB compiles and publishes extensive data on characteristics of the facility and parole populations. These reports include information on population composition and characteristics, summaries of population movements, and projected changes in the size of populations under DJJ jurisdiction. Some of these reports can be viewed and downloaded from this website through the links below. Others may be available in paper form by contacting the JRB at (916) 262-1485.

Research and Evaluation Reports

The JRB publishes reports on research and evaluation projects it conducts as well as for contracted studies. These reports include process and impact evaluations of the Division’s rehabilitative programs, treatment needs assessments, need and risk classification development, and operational research.

Research Reports and Publications

The JRB conducts research on parole programs, develops projections for the Division's facility and parole populations, and other specified research projects on youths.

In addition, the JRB carries out short-term and long-term process and impact evaluations of the DJJ’s rehabilitative programs, conducts research designed to assess the DJJ’s facility needs, and provides technical assistance and resources for special projections. Requests for Additional Data

The JRB currently gathers and distributes extensive statistical data on DJJ youths and parolees. These data are published and regularly available in a number of reports. The JRB staff also provides information in response to direct requests for data not included in published reports. These requests are considered on a case-by-case basis, and not all such requests can be accommodated. For further information about additional data that the JRB may be able to provide, please contact the Office of Research at (916) 323-2919.
