William “Bill” Enfield, retired CDCR Chief of Internal Communications, passed away Sept. 5, 2023.

Enfield began his CDCR career in the Office of Public and Employee Communications (OPEC) at Headquarters in June 2012.

He remained the Chief of Internal Communications until he retired in July 2021.

Within CDCR, Enfield is probably best known for overseeing the annual Medal of Valor ceremony, working closely with institution public information officers to gather nominations.

Prior to state service, Enfield was a journalism instructor at Sacramento State University following his 28-year career in the newspaper industry.

During his nine years at CDCR, Enfield oversaw the transition of the department’s newsletter to a digital format with its own Inside CDCR website. Later, he was instrumental in that website being incorporated into the main CDCR website as a news blog.

Many current and former OPEC staff have shared memories of their time working with Enfield. Common words used to describe him include: calm, thoughtful, mentoring, and encouraging.

Enfield is survived by his wife.
