RJD holds first youth diversion program

Incarcerated people sitting in a circle with at-risk youth at RJ Donovan Correctional Facility (RJD).
A select group of incarcerated people spoke to at-risk youth about the reality of prison.

The first session of the youth diversion program Life Insight From Experience was held at RJ Donovan Correctional Facility (RJD) on Nov. 20.

The purpose of the program is to introduce and educate youth about the realities of prison life. The at-risk youth are referred to the program by the community as part of a partnership with STAR/PAL.

The San Diego non-profit group is focused on building youth and law enforcement relationships.

RJD’s incarcerated people welcomed nine youth to the institution.

The youth were given a tour by incarcerated people. They were also given an opportunity to ask questions about the experience of those serving life sentences.

The benefits to the youth were quickly evident, with their demeanor changing as the day progressed.

Initially demonstrating defiance and disinterest, the day ended with the youth committing to attend school every day. They also agreed to work on making better decisions.

RJD is committed to serving their community in correlation with their incarcerated people. According to organizers, they are looking forward to the next session in December as well as the months ahead.
