The California Prison Industry Authority (CALPIA) held a graduation ceremony in partnership with CDCR at California State Prison, Solano (CSP-Solano) on Feb. 6.

Sixty-nine graduates received their nationally recognized job certifications and/or state-certified apprenticeships.

Incarcerated individuals obtain workplace knowledge, skills, and job training through CALPIA. The apprenticeship program qualifies graduates for meaningful employment once they return to their communities. CALPIA has established a partnership with the California Department of Industrial Relations – Division of Apprenticeship Standards, where participants can learn on-the-job training.

Keynote speaker has found success outside of prison

Former CALPIA graduate Robert Castaneda was the keynote speaker. Castaneda graduated from CALPIA’s Optical program and is now a licensed optician for a major eyeglass retailer.

“I resorted back to CALPIA when I started looking for jobs,” said Castaneda. “I had my certification in Optical. If CALPIA didn’t offer this, I would not be here today. Learning these skills allowed me to excel in the work that I do. Everything that you are learning, that’s some real stuff. Take note of everything you are learning. It will give you an advantage when you get out.”

CALPIA General Manager Bill Davidson also shared words of encouragement with the graduates.

“I believe that each of you has demonstrated you have done something good,” said Davidson. “It’s not just intentions. Intentions are what may have led you towards CALPIA, but you acted upon that and are here today because of what you have done.”

Acting Warden Thomas Tyler recognized the graduates for a job well-done.

“CALPIA has always been an important program to the men here at CSP Solano,” said Tyler. “There are going to be some challenges along the way. I hope you don’t stop learning. CALPIA has some amazing programs. It is structured. Gives you all something to do. It gives you value in what you do. Congratulations.”
