Condemned Incarcerated Person Stephen M. Redd Dies

SAN QUENTIN — Stephen M. Redd, housed at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center on condemned status since 1997, died Dec. 21, 2023. He was 78 years old.

He was discovered unresponsive in his cell and at 12:38 p.m. he was pronounced deceased by medical staff. The Marin County Coroner’s Office will determine his official cause of death.

Redd was sentenced in Orange County on Feb. 28, 1997, and placed on condemned status. He was convicted of first-degree murder, second-degree burglary as a third striker, first-degree robbery as a third striker, attempted murder as a third striker, and second-degree robbery as a second striker.

Redd was a former Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Deputy who fatally shot a Yorba Linda supermarket manager during a robbery. 

There are currently 651 condemned persons in CDCR. The state’s last execution was in 2006. On March 13, 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Executive Order N-09-19 , instituting a moratorium on the death penalty in California in the form of a reprieve for all people sentenced to death.
