Camp History

Deadwood Conservation Camp was opened June 1, 1962 and has been an important part of Siskiyou County since. Deadwood Conservation Camp fire crews provide a large part of the labor force for CAL FIRE during wildland fires in Siskiyou County.

Inmate Programs

Inmates may participate in hobby craft, softball, basketball, horse shoes, reading or other activities. Spiritual services are provided by community volunteers. Inmates quickly learn that life at a conservation camp is more desirable than serving time behind the walls of a prison. Their work activities and efforts during emergencies build a strong work ethic, and a feeling of self-worth. Soon, incarcerated volunteers will be offered the opportunity to participate in more advanced wildland firefighting training. This will provide the incarcerated people who choose to participate in the training with additional experience and expand employment opportunities in firefighting upon reentry.
