Off‑duty Correctional Officer saves heart attack victim

By Lt. Angelo Gonzales

While attending a high school sporting event, an off-duty CDCR employee saw a man collapse. That’s when Mule Creek State Prison Correctional Officer Devin Vasquez rushed to assist.

Officer Vasquez, a 17-year veteran of the department, believed the man was suffering a heart attack. He started CPR and used the automated external defibrillator to resuscitate the man. The officer stayed with the man until emergency responders arrived and transported the victim to the hospital. According to medical staff, the victim is expected to make a full recovery in part due to the life-saving actions taken by Officer Vasquez.
