The staff of Tehachapi Mountain Adult School (TMAS) at California Correctional Institute (CCI), along with those on the custody side, recently teamed up for a trip to Dodger Stadium. In all, 107 staff attended the outing, many of them experiencing their first Major League Baseball game.

The CCI school staff and guests also received a scoreboard salute welcoming them to Dodger Stadium. It was one of many outings the group takes to improve morale and foster teamwork.

The Dodger Stadium trip was organized by Adult Basic Education III teacher Brian Landis.

“This event is one of many that the school staff does on a regular basis to build up camaraderie,” says Landis.

Other team-building events include dinner at local Basque restaurants, wine tasting at Tehachapi vineyards, staff barbecues at someone’s home, and Friday morning treats.

How it works:

  • Educational and vocational staff plan an optional weekend get-together every-other-month during off-hours.
  • Current and former employees, their families, and whomever else they want to bring are invited.

The group weekend outings were created to:

  • build friendship
  • reduce the stresses of correctional education
  • create friendships
  • and learn how to depend on each other.

The CCI school staff have positively responded to these team-building socializing moments, according to Landis.
