Avenal State Prison Adult Basic Education (ABE) students have been busy writing holiday cards for American service members stationed overseas.
Instructor S. Hamilton said it was a great opportunity to blend academics with acts of service.
The majority of ABE students are English language learners and this activity provides them with guidance on proper etiquette and sentence structure when writing a thank you card.
In addition, there was a discussion on how military members are serving abroad during the holidays. The cards will provide some holiday cheer while being away from their families while stationed overseas. Over 50 holiday cards were written and provided to the local Army recruitment office.
