Retired Correctional Counselor II Robert LeRoy Pope passed away Jan. 11, 2023, in Riverside. According to his family, he was 84.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sharon, his sister Margie, four children, 12 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
During the Korean War, he served in the US Navy. After the war, he went to work for the California Department of Corrections (CDC) for 25 years.
Be began as a correctional officer in 1966 at California Correctional Center in Susanville. Later, he transferred to Sierra Conservation Center in Jamestown. He then transferred to the California Institution for Men as a records officer. Finally, he transferred to California Institution for Women as a Correctional Counselor II.
After retiring from the department, he worked in church ministry for 27 years. He finally retired from ministry at age 82.
According to his family, Pope enjoyed working in the garden, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. Services were held Jan. 29 at Grove Community Church in Riverside.
