Alvin McDaniel Jr, retired DJJ, passes away

Retired Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) staff member, Alvin McDaniel Jr., passed away Feb. 12, 2023.

McDaniel worked for the California Youth Authority, now the Division of Juvenile Justice, for 33 years.

McDaniel started his career as a group supervisor at “YTS,” known as Heman G. Stark Youth Correctional Facility. He later transferred to DeWitt Nelson Youth Correctional Facility and served as a physical educator for the rest of his career.

Aside from serving as an SEIU union representative, he also ran the intramural sports programs for the youth at DeWitt Nelson and the Northern California Youth Center complex.

McDaniel’s sons, Jason and Montay McDaniel, also currently work at NA Chaderjian Youth Correctional Facility.

While attending Bakersfield College, he played collegiate basketball. After earning his Associate of Arts degree, he then attended California State University, Hayward, where he earned a Bachelors in Kinesiology.

The viewing is March 1 from 5-7 p.m. at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home, 14165 E. Harney Lane, Lodi.

The funeral is March 2, at 11 a.m., at Victory in Praise Church, 2029 E. Harding Way, Stockton.

Flowers should be sent to Cherokee Memorial in his name while cards and or gifts are to be sent to Victory In Praise Church.
