Joseph Spinney, captain, passes away

Joseph Spinney, a captain at California Institution for Women, passed away March 22, 2023.

Spinney began his CDCR career in June 2003 as a Medical Technical Assistant at Calipatria State Prison. In May 2007, he lateraled to Correctional Officer at Calipatria. Spinney promoted to correctional sergeant in July 2008 at California Institution for Men.

He then transferred to High Desert State Prison in January 2012, promoting to lieutenant in August 2012.

Four years later, he transferred to California Institution for Women. In May 2018, he promoted to captain, where he remained until his passing.

“Captain Spinney always volunteered to assist those in need and was always willing to operate his shaved ice machine to raise funds during staff events. Our sincerest condolences are extended to his family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” according to a statement issued by the institution.

Services were held April 6 at Thomas Miller Mortuary in Corona.
