Across California, CDCR staff and the incarcerated population are helping people ranging from attending a special needs prom to funding a high school program.
CIW attends special needs prom
California Institution for Women (CIW) staff was invited by Crossroads Church to attend their annual special needs prom. A Fairytale Night theme was enjoyed by 300 people with special needs. A CDCR volunteer was paired with someone from the special needs community for the evening. Activities for the night included photo opportunities, food, dancing and karaoke.

North Kern food sales benefit school program
On April 17, staff from North Kern State Prison presented a check to the McFarland High School Media Arts program. Funds totaling $7,400 were raised by the incarcerated population from food sales.
“If we are able to assist one child in realizing their full potential and help keep them off the streets and away from the prison system, then I feel that we have won,” said Warden Hixon. “When you visit the Unified School District of McFarland, you will see that the School Board, the Superintendent, the Principal, and the teachers are passionate and motivated on how they can better improve the lives of the students enrolled in their district.”
Hixon said CDCR staff is looking forward to seeing the students benefit from the donation.
“The Media Arts center is one of many Career & Technical Education opportunities available at McFarland High School. We look forward to seeing what the McFarland High School Media Arts department will do in the future and how many students’ lives it will positively impact,” Hixon said.
