Marvin “Marv” Russell Crews, a retired administrator, passed away May 8, 2023.

Crews served in the Army reserve during World War II with Company A, 767th Tank Battalion.

He retired as principal of education for the California Department of Corrections where he also held posts as a teacher, principal, officer, sergeant and captain. He worked for the department for 30 years.

Crews and his wife were avid bicycle riders. In 1989, at 50 years old and retired, he rode a bicycle from Canada to Mexico.

“You see, if I kept working, I could have made more money and retired at a great pension, but I wanted to do some physical things while I’m still healthy,” he told the Modest Bee, Aug. 8, 1989.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 1997. Crews is survived by two daughters, a sister and four grandchildren.
