James Walker, who retired as warden from CSP-Sacramento in 2009, passed away Oct. 15, 2023.

Walker began his CDCR career as a cadet in January 1977. After graduating in February, he reported to San Quentin State Prison.
In October 1983, he promoted to correctional sergeant at Folsom State Prison. He then promoted to correctional lieutenant in April 1987.
In September 1995, Walker promoted to correctional captain at CSP-Sacramento. He promoted again to associate warden in October 2003, then to chief deputy warden in 2005. His last promotion was to the warden post at CSP-Sacramento in November 2007.
After a long career, Warden Walker retired on Dec. 30, 2009.

“Warden James Walker was not only a pillar of strength for this institution but also a cherished mentor, leader, and friend to many of those who worked around him. His dedication to the well-being of staff was unwavering, leaving an incredible mark on this institution,” according to a statement issued by CSP-Sacramento.
“Warden Walker will be remembered for his dedication and the fine leadership he displayed within our department. He will forever remain in our hearts, and his influence will continue to guide us in our mission to uphold the principles he held dear. Our deepest condolences are extended to his family and friends during this difficult time.”
