Wasco State Prison-Reception Center (WSP-RC) held its annual staff appreciation carnival in mid-October. Organized by the WSP-RC Employee Liaison Committee (ELC), the carnival is an opportunity for leadership to show appreciation to all staff for all their hard work.
Staff efforts directly contribute to the prison’s operational success. Employees process thousands of incarcerated persons a year while also holding numerous rehabilitative programs.
The carnival boasted a deejay, popcorn, snow cones, cotton candy, a digital photo booth and a video gaming trailer. There were also a dozen local vendors offering shopping opportunities and refreshments to staff.
Each staff member also received a free tri-tip sandwich meal sponsored by the ELC, with first watch staff being greeted by managers passing out breakfast burritos at the end of their shift.
Staff could play games to receive tickets for a chance to win one of over 20 baskets. Staff could also dunk their favorite manager or supervisor, including the Warden, with all proceeds benefiting Kern County Honor Flight.
The honor flight program takes veterans who served during World War II, Vietnam, and Korea on a trip to Washington DC. There is no cost to the the veterans.
In addition to the ELC, California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA), California Correctional Supervisors Organization (CCSO), Correctional Peace Officers Foundation (CPOF), and the California Crime Victims Coalition (CVCC) donated funds to make the event successful.
