Cherylee Wegman, retiree, passes away

Cherylee Wegman, retired Community Resource Manager, passed away Dec. 25, 2023.

Wegman, a California native, began her career with the department at Kern Valley State Prison before transferring to California Correctional Institution.

Wegman became the City of Wasco’s first female mayor in 2001. She served as mayor four times and served on the Wasco City Council for 20 years.

In 2018, Wegman was recognized as Assembly District 32 Woman of the Year.

She was very involved in Kern County and Wasco.

Wegman served on the Citizen Advisory Committee at Wasco State Prison, served on the board of the Association of California Cities Allied with Prisons and was an active member of the Wasco Community Alliance Partnership.

“We extend our most sincere condolences to Cherylee’s family. She will be greatly missed by all,” according to a statement issued by Kern Valley State Prison.

Funeral Service will be held Friday, Jan. 26, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary & Mass of Catholic Burial St. John’s Evangelist Catholic Church in Wasco. Graveside services will follow at 11 a.m. at Wasco Memorial Park. Following graveside services, a reception will be held at Wasco Elks Lodge #2419.
