Vernon Atkins, retired sergeant, passes away

Vernon “Big Daddy” Atkins, retired correctional sergeant, passed away Dec. 1, 2023.

Atkins began his career with the department in May 1983 at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad.

In 1987, he promoted to the rank of sergeant. He remained at Correctional Training Facility for 26 years before retiring in 2009.

Prior to his years of correctional service, he served in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of sergeant. During his military service, he was deployed to the demilitarized zone in Korea from 1980 to 1981.

“Beyond his professional life, Sgt. Atkins was a man deeply devoted to his faith, family, and friends. His loss is deeply felt by all who knew him, and his memory will be cherished forever,” according to a statement issued by the institution.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Jan. 20, 2024, from 11 am to 3 pm at Orchard Baptist Church in Vacaville.
