A Central California Women’s Facility recruiter spoke to staff, students and administrators at University of California (UC) Merced as part of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Lt. M.D. Williams, a recruiter and ambassador for the Government Alliance on Race and Equity, spent Monday, Jan. 15, speaking at the UC Merced Multicultural Center. She discussed career opportunities, the California Model, and ways the Women’s Facility in Chowchilla gives back to the community.

Williams also shared the recently aired segment from NBC’s Today Show highlighting the pups program.

According to Williams, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday marked as a national day of service. The day is meant to be one of volunteering to improve our communities.

To honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, the university’s Community Engagement Center has partnered with the Office of Social Justice and Identity Programs to directly serve local communities by providing UC Merced students and faculty with on- and off-campus opportunities.

The event included painting flattened oak leaves for Yosemite National Park and creating cards of encouragement for the over 2,000 incarcerated people at Central California Women’s Facility.

These cards will be personally delivered to the incarcerated individuals in early February by a selected approved group of students and faculty from UC Merced.
