Calipatria State Prison Education Department recently celebrated 49 students with a graduation ceremony. The graduation celebrated the incarcerated students on their accomplishments, earning degrees ranging from GEDs and vocational certifications to associate degrees.
“Commencement. It means the beginning of something new. It reflects the meaning of the Latin word, inceptio, which also essentially means ‘a beginning.’ Your achievements today mark the end of one journey and the beginning of another,” said Principal S. Macias.
The students worked hard to accomplish their goals and were rewarded with a celebration. As they entered for the ceremony, the students were greeted by family members.
In attendance included:
- Dr. Andrew Sanchez, Associate Dean of Student Equity and Achievement, Imperial Valley College
- Oscar Medina, Supervisor of Correctional Education Programs, Office of Correctional Education
- various executive management officials
- staff from different Calipatria departments.
“Education is the pathway to rehabilitation. When someone completes their GED, it signifies a milestone in their lives to recognize a person’s aptitude to learn and widen their experiences,” said Associate Warden R. Acevedo.
The Calipatria State Prison Education Department continues to strive toward higher learning and the rehabilitative process for the incarcerated persons under its care.
