John Nunez, a retired correctional captain, passed away Jan. 21, 2024. He worked for the department from 1983 until retiring in 2006.

For over two decades, Nunez helped the department fulfill its mission, beginning as a correctional officer at San Quentin in March 1983. He then transitioned from correctional officer to carpenter II in 1984. Eight months later, he transferred to Folsom State Prison.
He promoted to carpenter III at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in September 1987. The following year, he promoted to Supervisor of Building Trades at San Quentin.
In 1990, he promoted to Chief of Plant Operations. Then, in 1994, he transferred to Folsom as plant manager. He became a correctional business manager at San Quentin in 1996, promoting to correctional business manager II in 1999.
He transferred to captain in 2003 and then to correctional captain in January 2005. He retired in February 2006.
“Captain Nunez will truly be missed by many,” according to a statement issued by San Quentin Rehabilitation Center.
Services will be private.
