He began his CDCR career as a cadet at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center in July 1987.

After graduating the Basic Correctional Officer Academy, he reported to Avenal State Prison in August 1987. In 1993, he transferred to Wasco State Prison-Reception Center. Four years later, he promoted to correctional sergeant. He remained at the institution until retiring in December 2010.

“Paul will forever be remembered by his ability to make you laugh. Paul was known as ‘Doc’ amongst his friends, family, and co-workers due to his ownership of a beautiful ‘Back to the Future’ style DeLorean he loved to share with people. Please keep the Nigh family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” according to a statement issued by Wasco State Prison-Reception Center.

Nigh was a regular on the reality TV series “Fireball Run.” He, along with his DeLorean modified to look like the film version of the car, were popular at movie screenings and “Back to the Future” events.

According to his family, he died in a crash after suffering a medical emergency behind the wheel of his beloved DeLorean.

Remembrance from longtime friend

According to Dr. Jana Swearengin, with Salinas Valley State Prison, she had been friends with Nigh for decades.

“Paul Nigh was also the CEO of Custom Pins and Buckles. He designed a buckle during a contest with CDCR and it took off from there. I’ve known Paul since I was 13 years old and he was a truly wonderful person. He was a gifted musician, magician, draftsman, and never ever lost his love of being a peace officer. Paul loved CDCR and his CDCR family. He was a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. I will truly miss his humor and devotion to those he loved,” she writes.
