Shorty began his career with the department in October 2000 at Centinela State Prison as an Electrician II. He later transferred to Valley State Prison in December 2001.

In 2002, he transferred again to the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison at Corcoran (SATF). Four years later, he transferred to CSP-Corcoran as a stationary engineer.

In April 2007, he attended the Basic Correctional Officer Academy. After graduating in August, he was assigned to SATF as a correctional officer.

In November 2014, Shorty returned to CSP-Corcoran as an Electrician II. Then, in June 2015, he accepted his final assignment as a stationary engineer at CSP-Corcoran, where he remained until his passing.

“After completing nearly 24 years of service with CDCR, working at various institutions and in varying capacities, Shorty will be missed by those who worked with him,” according to a statement issued by CSP-Corcoran. “Shorty was known to be proud of his Native American heritage from the Navajo Tribe. He is remembered as a quiet person who enjoyed his motorcycle and was a loving father and grandfather.”

Warden T.L. Campbell wrapped up the statement with the following: “Our deepest condolences are extended to the Shorty family as they mourn the loss of their loved one.”

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., May 17, at Desert View Funeral Home in Shiprock, New Mexico. A process will begin at noon to the Benally Family Plot in Montezuma Creek in Utah. A reception will follow at 2 p.m.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date, yet to be determined, in Hanford.
