Palma School, a private college preparatory school for boys in sixth to 12th grades, operates under the Christian Brothers Institute of California.

Palma Leadership Academy Program is a unique initiative bringing together CTF residents serving life sentences and Palma students. It focuses on teaching participants to manage challenging situations resourcefully and envision a brighter future.

The program is facilitated by the Phoenix Alliance Group members who are trained to:

  • offer transformational perspectives
  • encourage meaningful discussions about making wise choices
  • developing a future vision
  • engage constructively in relationships and community activities.

The program covers various critical topics, including:

  • the impact of personal choices
  • motivational factors behind behaviors
  • common thinking errors
  • worldviews
  • responsibility versus a victim mindset
  • proactive decision-making
  • and effective communication.

The graduation event was a celebration that included a brunch and the “step forward exercise,” which is a privilege exercise intended to foster understanding and empathy.

Guest speakers at the event included acting Warden Edward J. Borla, students, Palma staff, and the incarcerated participants.

“Programs like the Palma Leadership Academy are vital in our efforts towards rehabilitation and community reintegration. By fostering an environment of mutual learning and understanding, we not only aid in the personal growth of our incarcerated population but also empower them to contribute positively to the community,” said Borla.
