Richard Prokop, retired counselor, passes away

CDCR was notified July 2, 2024, of the passing of Richard “Rick” Prokop, retired correctional counselor II.

He began his career with the department as a correctional officer at the Correctional Training Facility in March 1989.

In February 1990, he transferred to California Men’s Colony at San Luis Obispo. A decade later, he promoted to sergeant at Avenal State Prison in Avenal. In January 2006, he promoted to lieutenant at Pleasant Valley State Prison.

A year later in 2007, he was appointed as a correctional counselor and promoted to correctional counselor II in May 2016.

Subsequently, he transferred back to the Correctional Training Facility (CTF) in October 2016, where he remained until retiring on June 29, 2020.

“Rick was an invaluable member of CTF and will always be in our hearts. He was very well respected amongst his peers, subordinates, supervisors, and managers. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and worked with him,” according to the institution. “As we mourn the loss of Rick, our thoughts and sincerest condolences are with his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.”
