San Quentin staff and the population recently faced off in a friendly match of kickball. The sight of incarcerated residents and staff members laughing and strategizing together was a stark contrast to the usual dynamics within prison walls.
Officer Ramirez, who is part of the California Model Resource Team, helped organize the June 21 event.
The event fosters positive interactions, attracting a diverse group of participants eager to leave their roles at the door and engage in a lighthearted competition. According to participants, the field transformed into a symbol of unity and teamwork.
Over the course of several months, San Quentin Rehabilitation Center has hosted several collaborative events such as a chess match, two softball games, and San Quentin’s first exhibition basketball game.
Culture shift on the field
Staff members embraced the chance to be part of something different with many volunteering their time to participate. By stepping onto the field as teammates and opponents, the cultural shift was truly present.
Having the opportunity to come to work and stand on the sidelines motivating everyone and encouraging both teams was inspiring. Participating in sporting events has helped to break down some of the communication barriers that still exist.
One of the residents, who wished to remain anonymous, was enthusiastic about the game and the changes happening inside California prisons.
“Playing kickball with the correctional officers was a rare chance to interact with staff,” he said. “It felt like we were all just a group of people enjoying the game, regardless of who we were. I wondered if they would go easy on us during the game or play to win. Regardless, it meant a lot to us.”
When hosting collaborative events, it’s important to maintain a level of respect and sportsmanship, even in a casual setting, according to organizers. The San Quentin resource team is planning more activities like this in the future. They help pass the time while providing a sense of normalcy in an otherwise challenging environment.
