This video takes viewers behind the scenes of the annual Medal of Valor ceremony.

In this video, we take viewers behind the scenes of the 2024 Medal of Valor ceremony, honoring staff who went above and beyond.

While the department’s annual Medal of Valor ceremony is held in September, a lot goes into making the event happen.

Long process for Medal of Valor ceremony

Beginning in January, the Office of Public and Employee Communications receives Medal of Valor nominations. After they are compiled and vetted, the Medal of Valor committee and executives vote, choosing the appropriate medals.

Video interviews, website updates, photo gathering, script writing, logistics planning, and Inside CDCR stories are then prepared. Continuing behind the scenes work, the press office begins crafting press releases on those receiving awards.

The final ceremony, after months of preparation, is live streamed with multiple cameras, lighting, and much coordination.
