Pelagio “Phil” Verba, Jr., a retired correctional officer, passed away Dec. 24, 2024. Verba was 84 years old.

Verba began his career with the department in February 1986 as a cadet at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center in Galt.
After graduating the Basic Correctional Officer Academy in March, he reported to California Medical Facility in Vacaville. He remained at the institution until retiring in June 1993.
He was also committed to his faith, serving as an ordained deacon in the Diocese of Sacramento from 2000 until his passing. Verba retired from active ministry in 2015, according to the Diocese.
“Our deepest condolences are extended to the Verba family as they mourn the loss of their loved one,” according to a statement issued by the California Medical Facility.
