CSP‑Corcoran hosts interfacility softball game

California State Prison (CSP) Corcoran hosted the first interfacility softball game March 21 between Facilities 3B and 4B.

The players, all incarcerated at CSP-Corcoran, showed sportsmanship while building camaraderie.

The game started fast with Facility 4B putting up four runs in the first inning. Team 4B led for the majority of the game, at times widening their lead by as many as eight runs. However, Team 3B was determined to make it a challenge, stepping up their game.

Trailing by six runs at the top of the eighth inning, the 3B team rallied to cut the deficit to one run going into the top of the ninth.

Determined not to let the game slip away, Team 4B put forth an impressive defensive effort and sealed a narrow 20-19 victory.

Sportsmanship, camaraderie, rehabilitation

Invited guests said they were impressed with the sheer athleticism displayed by the residents.

In addition to the game, there was a sound system playing music and play-by-play commentary by 4B residents. The Visions Adult School media specialist captured footage of the game.

According to those on the yard, there was a genuine display of camaraderie, laughter, and overall support demonstrated by the residents.

Players from opposing teams were seen cheering for their own teammates but also offered compliments to the opposing team.

When asked how he felt the game went, one resident said he was grateful.

“I honestly didn’t think this game was even going to happen. We got rained out last week, but luckily, everything played out in our favor this week,” he said. “It was really cool to see custody cheering us on (as well as) the people in the suits and ties. Just seeing guys from the other yard be allowed to come over and play against us (was great). For at least a brief moment in time, I felt I was out at a park playing an intramural baseball game. It gives me hope and a sense of what it’ll be like when I go home.”

The residents from both yards demonstrated the benefits and value of pro-social behaviors and how athletic activity in sports contributes to positive rehabilitation.

CSP-Corcoran is committed to providing positive recreational programs such as this interfacility softball game.
