CDCR recruiters collaborated with Sacramento State University by participating in two recent events aimed at attracting future correctional officers.
The recruiters, from the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center in Galt, offered information about CDCR career opportunities to student athletes and criminal justice majors.

During the March 20 Athletes to Officers event, former college athletes Sergeants C. Thorntona and S. Andrews spoke to Sacramento State athletes. The presentation highlighted the skills athletes develop can translate well into careers in law enforcement.
“The same leadership abilities athletes hold transfer well to being a correctional officer,” said Andrews. “They already have the mindset of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, which are critical in this profession.”
During the Sac State Law Enforcement Candidate Scholars Speed Networking March 28 event, Sergeants D. Norgaard and J. Kuhns spoke to attendees. This program is designed for students who are actively exploring careers in law enforcement.
The sergeants engaged with students, providing insights into the role of correctional officers and opportunities in the department. Both sergeants enjoyed the interactive format and were enthusiastic about the interest shown by the students.
“I had a great time getting to know the students,” said Norgaard. “There is a lot of interest, and they are a fun group. I see that they are very passionate, and I hope they choose the right career for them.”
These partnerships with Sacramento State are part of CDCR’s initiative to attract motivated individuals to the field of corrections.
