RJD investigating attempted homicide of peace officer

RJD Safety and Security update officer attack attempted homicide incident.

CDCR officials are investigating the alleged attempted homicide of a peace officer at Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility (RJD) in San Diego.

On April 23 at approximately 5 a.m., an incarcerated person allegedly used an improvised weapon to stab an officer through a food/cuff port, striking the officer’s protective vest. The officer was able to leave the area and call for assistance. Staff immediately responded and the weapon was relinquished without further incident.

The weapon did not penetrate the officer’s stab-proof vest. The officer was not injured in the attack.

The incarcerated person was transferred to another institution. Prison officials are currently investigating the incident. The case will be referred to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for possible felony prosecution.

Peer support and Employee Assistance Program services are being offered to employees. The California Correctional Peace Officers Association was notified.
