This month, California Men’s Colony (CMC) celebrated 23 participants graduating the Occupational Mentor Certification Program (OMCP).
This rigorous program trains long-term incarcerated individuals to become certified Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) counselors through more than 600 hours of coursework, hands-on practicum, and a state-recognized exam. This year’s cohort earned an impressive 90.2 percent pass rate.
OMCP participants are carefully selected based on their disciplinary record, programming history, and commitment to personal growth. Once certified, they serve as co-facilitators in Cognitive Behavioral Intervention (CBI) groups across CDCR institutions, modeling professionalism and accountability.
Chief Deputy Warden Nathan Gaughan addressed the graduates, commending their effort and resilience.
“You’ve shown what dedication and integrity can accomplish,” he said. “This is just the beginning of the impact you’re going to make.”
The OMCP at CMC is run in partnership with Options Recovery Services, whose licensed counselors and subject matter experts bring real-world experience and mentorship to the classroom. Their involvement has been critical in preparing participants for careers in counseling both inside and outside CDCR.
